Margaret River Karate Club

Sensei Ken Rouw has an insatiable appetite for karate - devoting almost half a century of his life to martial arts, in the southwest region of Western Australia.

The seeds for establishing a karate dojo in Margaret River were first sewn in the community more than 50 years ago when the local population was just 3700.

At that time, the first classes were held at the Anglican Church. The karate style taught was Shuriken, and the club was affiliated with Budokan International under Chew Choo Soot. That was in early 1970. At that time Tony Jackson was the head sensei.

Eight years later, in May 1978, the club changed its name to the Margaret River Karate Club, relocated from the old Convent and set up a new dojo in the Gloucester Park Pavilion, and began teaching Shotokan karate.

They remained there for the next 10 years. During this time plans were put into action to build their very own dojo.

Sensei Ken, along with Sensei Tony, senior instructors and students all chipped in and helped with fundraising, grant applications and hard yakka.

The new dojo was completed and officially opened in June 1989, and has operated there since that time.

After Sensei Tony retired in 1991, Sensei Ken continued to be the club’s source of strength – and continues to do so.
